Chief Designer at Matter working on the neuroscience of happiness. I lead teams making durable, inclusive, and aesthetic design for screens, hands, and paper. I’ve helped organisations of all sizes, from start-ups to behemoths like the BBC and National Geographic.
My work and prose has featured in publications such as I Love Typography, Typographica, TYPE magazine, 8 Faces, .Net magazine, 24 Ways, and in books such as Hardboiled Web Design (Five Simple Steps), Fluid Web Typography (New Riders), The Principles Of Beautiful Web Design (SitePoint), The Manual, and the first Smashing Book.
I’ve also been fortunate to be invited to give dozens of talks to share my practice at conferences such as South by South West, OSCON, An Event Apart, Beyond Tellerand, and Ampersand.
In 2005, I was the first designer to be accepted into the International Society of Typographic Designers based on work for the screen alone. In 2009, I founded Fontdeck, the vanguard web fonts service that brought some of the world’s best typefaces to the web for the very first time. In 2010, I started Mild Bunch, the oldest indie co-working space in Bristol, where I still work today.
Formerly, I was a partner at Analog and Fictive Kin, Creative Director at OmniTI, and founder of Grow Collective. To find out more please see the interviews and profile on my old site.
